Stone masonry

Stone has excellent bearing properties, provides a solid heat insulation and soundproof layer and contributes to any architectural project aesthetically. Both artificial (bricks and concrete slabs) and natural stone is used in construction. Stones are placed in a specific order on cement-based masonry mortar.

Natural stonework using irregular-shaped stones is called coarse or rough masonry and is considered to be the most complicated masonry type that calls for a highly qualified mason. The main challenge is to select stones with matching dimensions and surfaces in order to have even rows of stones. Daily height limitations apply to every type of masonwork, otherwise the weight of stones will squeeze mortar out of the bottom rows.

Natural stone is considered to be a local construction material with unique decorative properties. Beautifully alternating layers and natural colors offer both architects and customers additional opportunities for aesthetic expression.

To choose the right type of stone for construction you always need to take into account weather conditions in the region; however, in countries with a warm and dry climate, such as Greece, stone structures last for centuries. Below you can find some photographs of a traditional house in Petralona, Chalkidiki, that we built using stonework techniques.
